Turning Wrenches and Raising Kids: Tahlia’s Story This Mother’s Day
This Mother's Day, we’re celebrating resilience, ambition, and the quiet power of mums who do it all—like Tahlia Perry.
Tahlia is a third-year Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology apprentice at Midland City Nissan, training through the nationally recognised NISSMAP program, delivered by WPC Group in partnership with Nissan Australia.
But outside of the workshop, she holds another important title—Mum.
Balancing nappies and nuts-and-bolts, Tahlia is part of a growing but underrepresented group: young mothers in trades. According to recent government data, mothers make up less than 5% of all apprenticeships in traditionally male-dominated industries like automotive—yet their determination and work ethic are second to none.
“It can be full-on,” says Tahlia, “but I want my child to see that you can chase your goals, no matter what. Being an apprentice has given me confidence, stability, and a real future.”
The NISSMAP program has supported Tahlia throughout her journey—providing not just skills training but a workplace that respects her dual role. Her team at Midland City Nissan, along with mentors from WPC Group, have championed her growth every step of the way.
“Tahlia’s commitment is outstanding,” says her mentor. “She’s not just a role model for other mums—she’s a role model for all apprentices.”
This Mother’s Day, we honour apprentices like Tahlia who are juggling the hardest job in the world with one of the most rewarding. WPC Group is proud to support women forging careers in the trades while building bright futures for their families.
